Both clinics are free and open to all ages.

Beginner Trapping Clinic
Saturday, October 4, 2008 - 8 am - NOON

7:30 to 8:00 am - Participants arrive
Registration check-in, snacks & drinks, enter door prize drawing.

8:00 - Welcome and introductions

Class 1 - Trapping rules and regulations

  • Importance of trapping
  • Furbearers in Missouri
  • Permits, limits, zones, tags

Class 2 - Traps & Supplies

  • Trap styles, sizes, parts & accessories
  • Trap preparation
  • Trap setting demos
  • Tools, lures and baits

Class 3 - Basic Land Sets

  • Choosing location, trap type & size
  • Trap bedding, staking, covering, lures
  • Handling your catch

Class 4 - Basic Water Sets

  • Choosing location, trap type & size
  • Identifying lodges, dens, runways
  • Blind, pocket, mound & baited sets

Class 5 - Fur Handling

  • Fur handling terms & tools
  • Skinning, fleshing & stretching demo
  • Selling your fur

A dealer will have trapping supplies for sale after the clinic if needed.

Note: Beginner trappers are welcome to stay for the advanced classes. Drinks will be available, please bring a sack lunch if you plan on staying.

Advanced Trapping Clinic

Saturday, October 4, 2008, 1:00pm to 5:00pm

12:30 - 1:00 pm - Participants arrive

1:00 - Welcome and introductions

Class 1 - Trap Modification

  • Trap preparation & tuning
  • Pan leveling & bolt replacement
  • Night latching
  • 4-Coiling
  • Baseplating & laminating

Class 2 - Land Sets

  • Selecting the right location
  • Use of scents, lures & eye attractors
  • Troubleshooting sets
  • Weatherproofing your sets

Class 3 - Water Sets

  • Drowning rig choices
  • Use of scents, lures & eye attractors
  • Trapping under ice
  • Setting for multiple catches

Class 4 - Knife Sharpening & Care

  • Keeping knives sharp
  • Sharpening skinning knives
  • Fleshing knife care & sharpening

Class 5 - Minimizing Fur Damage

  • Proper handling in the field
  • Transporting and storage
  • Preventing singe

YOUTH WATEFOWL CLINIC & HUNT

Clinic - Saturday, October 18, 2008 - (8 am - 2 pm)

Hunt - Saturday, October 25, 2008 - (6 am - noon)

 

Participant Requirements:

First time clinic participant
Age 9 to 15
Accompanied by adult sponsor
Must attend clinic to attend hunt
Bring your own shotgun (or request the use of a shotgun)
Ammunition supplied by clinic

Activities Include:

Rules & Regulations
Sporting Clays
Shotgun Patterning
Waterfowl Identification
Retriever Demonstration
Waterfowl Calling Techniques
Game Handling & Processing
Duck Calling Contest (after hunt)

- Lunch provided both days, plus milk and donuts on morning of hunt -
